Medical Laboratory Elective in Morocco

Interns in Rabat stay together in an intern house which is a traditional Moroccan Riad. Note that there is no air conditioning or fan in the riad accommodation. However, Moroccan Riad architecture is generally designed with a tropical climate. Thick walls and an open central courtyard help with ventilation and cooling. The Riad is located in the Medina area and all the volunteer projects and tourist sites are located within close proximity.

Interns often share a bedroom with up to 3-4 other participants, of the same gender depending on the number of participants in the program during the given period of time. Participants share common areas, and are welcome to use the courtyard for breaks and meals. WiFi is provided at the accommodation. The bathrooms are shared and the accommodation has a western style toilet system.

During off peak times or due to availability constraints interns are also accommodated in a guest house, which is also similar standard and provides the same level of comfort. The guest house is also located in the Medina area and is a 3-5 min walk to the intern house. The guest house has good WiFi and also has western style toilets.

2 Moroccan meals (Breakfast and dinner) will be provided in this project.

Yes, students should consult their doctor or travel clinic for recommended vaccinations before travel.

The internship is open to medical and nursing students from year 1 onwards,as well as recent graduates in these fields. Participants must be enrolled in or have recently graduated from a medical or nursing program to qualify for the program. The minimum internship duration is 4 weeks..

Placements are primarily observation-based but tailored to student level (nursing or medical). Students shadow professionals in departments such as surgery, pediatrics, emergency, general wards, OBGYN, and more. All students need to give preference of 3-4 departments of their choice. Depending on the preference and internship/elective duration department allocation shall be done.

Due to local regulations and ethical standards, students will not perform hands-on procedures. However, they will observe, learn, and gain insight into patient care, local health systems, and medical practices.

You’ll have full in-country support from our local team in Rabat. In case of any emergencies or problems, the staff will be there to support you and assist you always. 

Yes, all interns are provided pickup from Rabat Airport. Those interns who are already in Rabat or arriving by train can be picked up from a meeting point.

Most of the placements are within a short distance from the accommodation. Students mostly walk or use taxis or tram to visit different parts of the city.

Rabat–Salé Airport (RBT) has direct flight connections from European and Middle Eastern destinations. Ryan Air, Royal Air Maroc, Air France and Iberia are some of the major airlines flying into Rabat. 

You can also arrive at Casablanca Airport as it has more international flight connections. From Casablanca, you can travel to Rabat by train.
